Cloud EDI Integration for WMS | Piper Warehouse Case Study | EDI2XML
See how Piper Warehouse leveraged EDI2XM’s managed EDI service to automate X12 document exchanges directly into its WMS (Warehouse Management System) via Direct SQL connectivity.
This project improved operational efficiency, ensured seamless compliance with trading partners, and removed the burden of manual EDI management from the IT team, enabling the company to focus on its core mission of logistics and warehouse excellence.
Client
Piper Warehouse, part of Piper Logistics, is a U.S.-based logistics and warehousing company headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. The company operates as a large-scale 3PL provider, offering warehousing, transportation, distribution, and supply chain services across the United States.
With multiple warehouse facilities and millions of square feet of operational space, Piper Logistics supports a wide range of industries through scalable and customized logistics solutions.
Challenge
Before the implementation of EDI2XML Managed Services, Piper Warehouse faced several integration challenges:
- Manual or semi-manual handling of inbound and outbound EDI transactions
- Complexity in mapping X12 documents to SQL-based WMS tables
- Risk of delays and data inconsistencies between trading partners
- Limited scalability for onboarding additional EDI partners
- No centralized monitoring or automated acknowledgment process
Piper required a fully managed, scalable integration solution that could operate continuously and ensure reliable communication between external EDI partners and internal systems.
Solution
EDI2XML designed and deployed a cloud-based fully managed EDI integration service acting as a secure and intelligent middleware between Piper Warehouse and its trading partner(s).
The platform performs real-time EDI transformation, system integration, and automated communication workflows.
EDI Integration with WMS
The integration connects EDI X12 transactions directly with Piper’s in-house WMS through Direct SQL connectivity.
EDI2XML acts as a translation and orchestration layer that:
- Receives EDI X12 documents from trading partners
- Transforms EDI messages into structured formats (XML/JSON)
- Maps transaction data directly into WMS SQL tables
- Extracts WMS data to generate outbound EDI messages based on partner specifications
Supported document types include:
- X12 940 – Warehouse Shipping Order
- X12 943 – Warehouse Stock Transfer Shipment Advice
- X12 945 – Warehouse Shipping Advice
- X12 944 – Warehouse Stock Transfer Receipt Advice
Integration flow diagram
The following diagram illustrates how EDI2XML acts as the central integration layer between Piper Warehouse’s trading partners and its WMS system.
Technical Implementation and Data Flow
The solution was implemented as a fully managed, cloud-based integration engine operating on scheduled automation cycles (every 15 minutes).
Inbound EDI Flow (Trading Partners → Piper WMS)
- System connects to FTP/SFTP mailboxes at defined intervals
- Retrieves incoming X12 940 and 943 documents
- Sends functional acknowledgments (when required by partners)
- Transforms EDI into structured XML/JSON format
- Inserts data directly into Piper WMS via SQL connectivity
- Sends automated email notifications to designated stakeholders
Outbound EDI Flow (Piper WMS → Trading Partners)
- Integration engine polls WMS for new transactional records
- Extracts relevant shipment and stock transfer data
- Generates X12 945 and 944 documents based on partner-specific mappings
- Converts WMS data into compliant EDI X12 format
- Transmits files securely to trading partner SFTP mailboxes
This architecture ensures a fully automated, bidirectional data exchange between systems with no manual intervention.
